Stay safe this winter
Bundle up and walk like a penguin.
When the weather brings ice and snow, being outdoors can be a challenge. Check weather advisories if you plan to go out. Older adults tend to lose body heat faster than when they were younger. A hard wind blows heat away from your body. On windy days, look to see if a wind chill alert has been issued.
If you do have to go out, use these tips to help you move about safely.
Walk this way
- Point your feet outward like a penguin. Keep them about a foot apart.
- Walk flat-footed. Take short steps or shuffle, with your knees loose.
- Keep your arms at your sides and slightly extended for balance. Don't put your hands in your pockets.
- Scan the route ahead for dark, icy patches. Always assume there's ice under snow.
- Wear shoes or boots with nonslip rubber soles and low heels.
- Wear sunglasses outdoors to cut down on glare from snow.
- Dress in loose layers of clothing. Air between the layers helps you stay warm. Keep your head and neck covered.
- Plan your trek so you don't have to rush. Go indoors if your hands or feet start feeling cold
